Mike = done

Between trips to the dentist (I need 4 freaking crowns, good lord) and fighting a bit of a hangover (neighbors came over and wine was opened...) I actually got a bike finished today.

And here you go:

Here's the rundown for the geeks:
-71/73 head and seat angles, 81mm of trail and 643mm front center
-41.5cm/16.3" chainstays (41cm/16.1" effective) with enough space for a 2.3 or 2.4
-31cm/12.2" bb height
-105.1cm/41.4" (wow!) wheelbase
-S-bends and Paragon Polydrops (QR inserts are shown, Mike will be rocking the 12x142 ones)
-Curved seat tube for tire clearance, toptube for narcissism
-For a 100mm travel tapered steerer fork and XX1/1x drivetrain/no front derailleur

This bike is intended to ride tight twisty midwest singletrack and with a super short wheelbase and steep-ish steering geometry it should certainly be up to the task.

Helping a friend clean out all his old junk/treasures before a move... and we found this little ensemble. Had to model it for the camera, I couldn't resist.

Photobomb 2- Mitch's 650b

Photobomb!

Apologies to all of you suckers who actually read the blog - a cascade of illness (Sarah, me, Bean, Kate, Leif) has kept me from doing anything but doctoring, shop work, and sleeping with an occasional ride thrown in to stay sane. So! That's it for me, here are pictures from David (29" adventure tour/mountain) and Mitch (650b hardtail XC bike).

Rusty on the loose! Plus; blast from the past from Dave

Just some random pictures (thanks Nick, thanks Dave) on a Wednesday night when I don't have much to say. I've been doing some tire testing for some fine folks at a tire company over the last few days and I might be allowed to post about that soon - weird to be "testing" stuff, as it basically just entails installing and going out to have fun.

In any case, Rusty gets ready for the Winter Park 50:

And a blast from the past from Dave, who writes: "10 years (11? 12?) later I'm still loving my WW. Can't believe it's been that long."

Actually, I don't think it's been 10. The only 10 year old bikes are all John Deere green, except Waltworks Zero (pirate packing tape and spraypaint). Call it 9. If my old hard drive hadn't croaked several years back I could probably say for sure...

Photos from Luis, soggy crotch ride report from Walt

Sarah and Bean are on the mend but I only managed a couple hours of work today. I DID go for a ride since the nice rainstorm we had left things actually non-dusty for the morning and I'm trying to go faster on our local flow/freeride/silly trail, the Bobsled.

So:
-Rode my newly reincarnated 6" 29er for only the second time after making some suspension and tire pressure changes.
-Got way too excited.
-Sprinted into the opening turns that I usually basically just roll into, as it's pretty steep.
-Immediately washed out in the 2nd or 3rd corner, landed on my camelbak bladder (which exploded and soaked my shorts/chamois) and bent my derailleur hanger such that I couldn't shift to any gear higher than 5th.
-Coasted down with my tail between my legs and went home.

Good thing I got out for that instead of building bikes, eh?

Now enjoy some Crested Butte pics from Luis, including the apparently obligatory (thanks a lot, Chris) urination shot.

Sick day!

Sarah and Bean are sick. So far I am ok but work is slow today, might be slow tomorrow. Just FYI, everyone.

To entertain you, here are some pictures of me on a 36er that I didn't even build. In fact Ray of Powderworks (my PC guys) built it and has raced BMX on it. Pretty neat!

Saturday random picture

Thanks to Dirk for the picture. He writes:

"Walt,

A year later and my waltworks is still amazing!  Sorry it took so long to get you a picture but I rarely pull over long enough thanks to this bike.  I hope everything is going well for you in Utah!!  I added a LEV dropper post this year so now the bike is straight up ridiculous.

Take care,

Dirk"

Quick Friday For-Sale

New stuff that I ended up with and had customers change their minds:
-Fox 100mm Float CTD 29er fork. Brand new. 15mm axle, tapered steerer. 2013 model year. $475.
-Gates 113t centertrack belt. New, never used or installed. $30.

Apropos of nothing, here are a couple pictures from Pete of his really old and somewhat old (10-ish and 5-ish years) WW bikes.

No, I don't know why the platforms are still clipped in.

That is a cool basket/bar combo!

When the cargo bike isn't long enough...

...attach the trailer and pull the Bean to the pool! I hereby declare myself the smuggest and most self-righteous bike commuter in all of Utah. I just gotta get a couple of "Kill Your TV" and "Share the Road" stickers for it and it'll be perfect.

A perfect fit!

I rode this frame (featuring sweet Schwinn 2-speed kickback hub) on a ~20 mile ride in VT on our vacation. For those folks who think all my personal bikes look weird - this is why. It is a *perfect* fit - saddle and bars both at the right height, correct reach, everything.

Longest quill stem I have ever seen

More pictures from Mark

I couldn't resist. I promise, non-36er content soon!

Lost in translation?

I really, really hope they meant "recent" or something, and not "prominent" here, because calling Hinault winning the tour on the first clipless pedals, in a clipless pedal ad, seems a  bit odd.

The Curry-Sixer - Complete!

Thanks to Mark for the photo. Back to work on Monday!
Before bombarding me with emailed questions, please read the 36er FAQ.
